Congratulations to Clay F. Semenkovich, MD who was named the 2016 recipient of the Edwin Bierman Award by the American Diabetes Association.
This lecture is awarded in honor of the memory of Edwin L. Bierman, MD. Dr. Bierman was an exemplary scientist, mentor and leader in the field of diabetes, obesity, hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis.
The award and lecture recognizes a leading scientist in the field of macrovascular complications and contributing risk factors in diabetes.
Semenkovich is currently the Irene E. and Michael M. Karl Professor and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Lipid Research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He is internationally recognized for his contributions to understanding the interactions between glucose and fatty acid metabolism and how they impact obesity, diabetes and complications such as atherosclerosis.
“Congratulations, Dr. Semenkovich. Thank you for your exceptional research contributions in macrovascular complications of diabetes,” said Desmond Schatz, MD, President, Medicine & Science for the American Diabetes Association. “Your critical translational work, spanning cultured cells, animal models and humans, enables us to make important advances in diabetes care and management.”
With nearly 150 publications, Semenkovich has led multidisciplinary approaches to translate basic science observations to people with diabetes, obesity and other disorders. He has provided new insight into how the synthesis of fat from glucose alters processes important to diabetes, and he has mentored more than 40 undergraduate, predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees. Both his teaching and his research accomplishments have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards. Semenkovich founded the Washington University Diabetes Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital to provide comprehensive clinical care to people with diabetes in the St. Louis region.
