A recent study, “Autoimmune Diseases in Children and Adults with Type 1 Diabetes from the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry,” co-authored by Drs. Jing Hughes and Janet McGill, is published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM), a journal of the Endocrine Society.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is associated with other autoimmune diseases (AID), but the prevalence and associated predictive factors for these comorbidities of T1D across all age groups have not been fully characterized.
In the T1D Exchange Clinic Registry, diagnosis of one or more autoimmune diseases in addition to T1D is common, particularly in women, non-Hispanic whites, and older individuals. Results of this study have implications for both primary care and endocrine practice and will allow clinicians to better anticipate and manage the additional autoimmune diseases that develop in patients with T1D.
