Heidi was born and raised in Buffalo, NY. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the University at Buffalo in 2008. She attended medical school at the University at Buffalo and graduated summa cum laude in 2012. She completed her residency in Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC in 2015 and started fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at Washington University in July 2015. She joined Dr. Ana Maria Arbeláez’s lab in Fall 2015 and developed an interest in the cardiovascular effects of glycemic extremes on people with diabetes and on children in the ICU setting.
Hypoglycemia in diabetes is associated with increased morbidity and potentially life-threatening effects on the cardiovascular system, including dysrhythmias and alterations in repolarization and heart rate variability. Recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia may be associated an adaptive response, with decreased incidence of arrhythmia and mortality. This study will evaluate changes in electrical heart activity and cardiac strain in people with type 1 diabetes with either intact or impaired counterregulatory responses to hypoglycemia.
