Monica completed a Bachelor of Science in Health Management, Fitness and Sports Medicine, with a Nutrition minor, at Southeast Missouri State University in 2005. After working in industry, Monica returned to Southeast Missouri State University to complete a Master of Science in Nutrition and Exercise Science. She then attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO, where she earned a Ph.D. in Exercise Physiology in 2015 studying exercise and diet interventions in models of obesity, fatty liver disease, and diabetes, under the direction of John Thyfault.
Monica’s research interests include studying the effects of dietary and exercise interventions in individuals with or at risk for diseases of metabolic dysfunction. Weight loss, diet, and exercise may have independent or additive benefits on different populations, including patients with metabolic disease. However, their differential influences and mechanisms of action remain to be fully elucidated. Since each of these lifestyle interventions has pleiotropic effects, their individual or combined utilization in the clinical environment as part of a primary prevention and treatment plan should be a principal objective.
