Patient Care

Dr. William E. Clutter with a patient

The Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is dedicated to providing the very best care in a friendly and compassionate environment. Our physicians are faculty members of Washington University School of Medicine. We provide state-of-the-art patient care using the newest technologies and professional expertise of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, ranked among the nation's top 10 hospitals.*  Endocrinology services at Barnes-Jewish are also currently ranked among the top 10 nationally.**

We offer the very latest in diagnostic and therapeutic services for the full range of endocrine-metabolic disorders, including: diabetes, high cholesterol levels, osteoporosis, overactive or underactive thyroid, thyroid tumors, and disorders of the pituitary, adrenal and parathyroid glands, ovaries, testes and pancreatic islets.

We believe in a comprehensive approach to care. As part of that approach, we strongly emphasize preventive medicine to prevent or avoid complications of endocrine-metabolic disorders.

Clay F. Semenkovich, M.D., professor of medicine and of cell biology and physiology, and longtime patient Gwyneth McKee discuss treatment options. Semenkovich has dedicated his career to examining the connection between diabetes and heart disease. (Photo by Robert Boston, originally for the Washington University Record, June 14, 2002, Vol. 26, No. 33) Our endocrinologists are a resource for physicians and patients. Often, we simply provide up-to-date advice to physicians and patients. In other cases we work with the physician and the patient over time. In some instances, because of the uniqueness of the disorder or the preference of the referring physician or patient, we provide ongoing care. We primarily see adult patients, but we do accept adolescent patients as well.

Our subspecialty, like all of medicine, is changing rapidly, and for the better. Our physicians are at the forefront of this change, conducting innovative research that is paving the way for more effective methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment. In this environment of discovery, we are able to offer our patients the very latest information and the very latest treatment options.

We look forward to serving you.
